Autumn Careers Fair – Supporting the next generation of industry talent

As part of our continued business growth and desire to attract and develop the next generation of skillsets within the industry, we recently attended the Autumn Careers Fair at Glasgow Caledonian University. A very well organised and attended event seen other organisations and ourselves from a wide range of sectors, provide our time and guidance to an attentive audience of under and postgraduates.

These events are a chance for us to guide students looking beyond their course to next steps and the best career path within the industry for them. Starfish Constructions Associate Director Kevin McCormack and our Senior Project Manager Mark Doris took time to offer advice on their career journey, the industry today and opportunities for employment.

It was encouraging to see an interested audience and everyone who visited the Starfish Construction stand was engaged to hear about our turnkey building envelope solutions and processes. Our focus at these events is to create awareness of our brand and organisation. We continually look to find people at the start of their career, who fit with our company culture and can bring new value to our customers through time.

It's also about giving something back. Our Corporate Social Responsibility is something we take pride in, from helping communities to adding skillsets and training to our industry.

Kevin McCormack told us; " I enjoy attending these events and believe it is critical for us as a business but also for the wider industry. On the day, I was asked many questions, including 'are you taking on part-time undergraduate students?' Something we are actively doing, and this would coincide with the building surveying degree whereby the current year two students are available next summer from June - January."

Kevin continued; "This will allow us to embed them, individuals, into our business with a longer-term strategy. A chance for us to give them access to work in different areas of the company, including technical surveying, estimating, design and business development. This approach allows candidates to explore all areas as well as finding a niche that they excel in and hopefully look to build a future with us."

Mark Doris commented that he also found the event encouraging; "It was exciting to see the high level of candidates and their desire to explore the industry.  Continually I was asked if we were taking on full-time postgraduates into a project management position. Quite simply, yes we are, and several candidates from the event certainly had the attitude and desire to work at Starfish Construction. The event proved the next generation for the industry is there. It's now for us to provide the opportunities, training and guidance they require."

We have taken the next steps in following up with candidates from the event and look forward to the next time.
